You will need to pay tax to US or Canadian government for the prize money. That is why they only want US or Canadian hackers.

Great Question! Let me double-check with the team and get back to you on this. Thank you,

Got the answer! Yes, you are eligible to participate as you are legally residing in the US.

Can I register but not submit a project?
Michelle Brain Manager • about 3 years ago
Hi Jose, Yes, no problem! It is very common that not all participants end up submitting a project for different reasons. We are happy to provide the resources and help where we can.

Updating this thread that we have just announced that we’re opening up Pygames globally! Please note that standard exclusions due to local laws, Foreign Asset Control, and other legal restrictions Pygames IS NOT open to:
Individuals who are residents of, or Organizations domiciled in, a country, state, province or territory where the laws of the United States or local law prohibits participating or receiving a prize in the Hackathon (including, but not limited to, Brazil, Quebec, Russia, Crimea, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria and any other country designated by the United States Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control).
We really look forward to seeing all the amazing games you are working on! Happy Building!

Hi Michelle, I think it is will be very useful if at least the organizer provide an extended deadline for one or two weeks considering that the competition is now open globally. At the beginning the competition was only available for US residents and Canada and 6 days ago was available to be open with some restrictions...

Hi Danny! Unfortunately I am on leave shortly after the winner announcement period which is why we can’t extend. Apologies we did explore if we could make that work but there was no good solution.
